Chapter 9 Discussion

December 3, 2008 at 7:16 pm (Uncategorized)

Over the last 100 years the methods of transportation have changed greatly. In the beginning most people traveled by foot or rode on horses. As people and the area around them started to evolve more constructive methods of travelign came along. People began to make boats or rafts to cross rivers and oceans. The train became another way for people to make it from one end of the country to the other faster. The car eventually came along and has developed farther and farther into what we drive today.

Many people have bought GPSs that help them find their way from one place to the other.

I think that computers have caused great change in the nature of people. Before computers and internet had been developed people would write letters to each other. If a person wanted to talk to another then they would go that persons house and talk to them. Instead sending them an e-mail or finding them in a chat room. I believe that relationships of people before computers can along were probably very strong, since instead of telling the person how you feel over the computer they had to go and say it to the person.

Chapter 12 Lab

November 14, 2008 at 1:28 am (Uncategorized)

The first game that I chose was the ID Theft Face Lift. I didn’t really know all about how you identification coudl be stolen and this game really helped me realize that there are a lot of different ways. The second game that I played was the Invest Quest game. Through that game I saw what actions you should take if you were asked for personal information over the internet. In the thrid game, The Case of the Cyber Criminal, I learned what steps you should take when your personal information is asked for through e-mail or over the internet. In the last game, Laptop Security, I figured out the best steps to keeping your laptop safe while you are traveling.

In my high school classes we don’t regurlary use a computer to do things in class. I would like to be able to have a computer to use during class when we do projects. I believe that blogs would really help in classes like science or math where you can ask for help on specific things.

Online Voting

On the subject of online voting I, personally, would prefer to be able to vote online. I think that it would be easier to vote on my computer at home, than to drive to a polling place and then have to wait in line. I don’t think that if voting was held online that the Republican party would have an advantage over the Democratic party. They both have a fair chance of getting votes, since both parties would be on the online ballots. I think that voting online should be availible to everyone. Some people have trouble getting to polling places because of work or other problems. If voting was availible to both, on the internet and at polling places, then I believe the number of people that come to vote will be higher.

Information System

I work a lot with information systems when I am doing a job for my 4-H club. The adult leaders and I keep track of all the members by creating a roster like page that has every members name on it. I also help put their drawn t-shirt designs on to a computer document, which lets everyone see in a better picture what the shirt is going to look like. And finally before each meeting I work with the adult leaders to create a schedule on what is going to take place at the meeting. I work on a computer constintly so that I can create documents that will help keep our 4-H club organized.

Chapter 6 Lab

October 17, 2008 at 2:59 am (Uncategorized)

The first thing that comes to my head when I am told to reasearch something is the topic of careers. I would love to become a creative writer and I don’t really know about the life of a writer. I know that a creative writers job can involve writing interesting novels and books, but what kind of pay do they recieve or what are the requirements to be a writer. The main question to anyone when they decide on a certain career is how much will we make. I learned that as a writer your salary can vary dramatically, from around $25,000 to around $92,000. I know that as a writer the actual possibilty of you becoming great and famous is very small and it can be hard to live on a small salary.

Another question that pops into my head when I think about my furture career is what classes would I take in college to earn a masters degree, and do they even have a masters degree for those who want to become writers. I immediatly went to the Ball State University website for my answers. I saw that they have a masters degree just for people who want to become creative writers. Continuing on my reasearch I also learned that the main classes in college pertain to the different ways for which you can write creatively. They offer classes about peotry, fiction, and creative nonfiction books. They cover specific authors and theories of writing. I belive that it is important that you reasearch all of your options when you are questioning different careers and to view the best colleges that offer those degrees.

 Three Questions:

I know that without my home computer it would be impossible for me to access the internet away from school. The home computer connects me to the outside world and lets me reasearch information that can’t be found in books. From my home computer I may be able to type on microsoft word, but I would have nothing to type if I couldn’t use the internet to find my information.

My home uses a cable interent connection. We are able to be connected to our internet wirelessly, as long as the cable modem can recieve information from the cable service. From what I have seem of the other services, I believe that they are more likely to have there internet accesses shut down, even if only momentarily. With a dial-up connection you start at the computer and modem, then the connection travels through a telephone jack, to the telephone lines, to the ISP’s modem, to the ISP’s router, and finally reaches the internet. There are so many steps that the connection has to complete before it makes it to the internet, I believe that there is a higher chance for the connection to be interrupted because of all of the steps.

When you are using a internet connection that has an always-on connection you have the dangers of any intruder entering into your computer informtaion. When many of the resources that we use have ports; like the internet, e-mail, and FTP, there are more ways for hackers to hack their way into your computer. The best way to protect your computer would to be to purchase a security system that allows you to see when one of your ports have been hacked into. Another security risk are viruses that can come into contact with your computer through e-mail, thus you must keep your virus protection software up to date. The software companies send out more updates as more viruses are created.

Chapter 6 Disscusion

October 15, 2008 at 2:08 am (Uncategorized)

I have found that when I read random websites that I have no idea where the information came from that some of the information can be misleading. I have learned not to use wikis unless I know who wrote the information. I have learned that the most relaible websites are the ones that have the domains of edu or gov. When the web addresses end in these then I know that the information is valid.

I believe that the well designed websites allow you to do things and save pictures. I also like when the website is changed around every once in a while. The one website that I believe is well made would be photobucket.com. I think that the poorly designed websites are the ones with just information and don’t really allow you to venture around and to save things on that website. I think that a poorly designed website is photobiz.com.

Chapter 5 Lab

October 10, 2008 at 12:20 am (Uncategorized)

In the beggining all I had was my home desktop. To set-up my network I started by connecting with the internet. I chose to contact Comcast and have them help me obtain internet. I decided to choose the wireless network, because if I ever get a laptop I want to be able to get on the internet through there. To install the wireless connection I had to contact Comcast and get step by step instructions on how they would want me to connect the internet. In the end I have a wireless connection to my home computer and if I need to add more lines I just need to contact Comcast.

Chapter 2 Disscussion, Kylie Hill

A wiki is a website that you can change the material on and that you can look to see what other people know, since wiki does mean ”What I Know Is.” I have never used a wiki, and I don’t think that I want to. A wiki can be changed, so I think that it will be hard to know whether the information is true or not. I guess a wiki could help you easily find the information about a specific topic quickly and effectively.
